Important Archaeological Site

Las Peñas de los Gitanos

Las Peñas de los Gitanos is one of the most important and fascinating archaeological sites in Andalusia, located in the vicinity of Montefrío. This enclave, located in a karstic formation, is known for its rich history that spans from the Neolithic to the medieval period.

It's a must-see destination for history and archaeology lovers. Its impressive karst landscape, combined with its rich archaeological heritage, offers a unique experience that connects visitors with the ancient civilisations that inhabited this region. Exploring this site not only provides an insight into the life and beliefs of our ancestors, but also highlights the importance of preserving our cultural heritage for future generations.

Montefrio, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, is a hidden treasure that deserves to be discovered. This charming village offers:

  • Breathtaking Views: From the lookout point of the castle, enjoy spectacular views that have been internationally recognized. Montefrio is known for its photogenic landscapes that have captivated photographers from around the world. In 2015, National Geographic included Montefrio in its list of the 10 towns with the best views in the world (Almost Ginger) (Piccavey).

  • Historical Heritage: Visit the Iglesia de la Villa and the Iglesia de la Encarnación, two architectural gems that reflect the rich history of the region. Megalithic Necropolis

  • Dolmens: The necropolis includes more than 100 dolmens, which are burial structures built with large stone blocks. These monuments date back to the Neolithic period and were used as mass graves.

    • Construction: Dolmens are formed by vertical stones supporting a horizontal slab, creating a burial chamber. Some of these dolmens are in an excellent state of preservation.

    • Archaeological Finds: Inside, human remains have been found in the foetal position, accompanied by grave goods including ceramics, flint tools and personal ornaments. These finds provide a detailed insight into the burial practices and religious beliefs of prehistoric communities.

Prehistoric Settlements

  • Los Castillejos: This area shows traces of an ancient settlement with defensive and storage structures. Archaeological remains found here include agricultural tools and everyday objects dating from the Neolithic and Bronze Age.

The remains of prehistoric dwellings can be seen, indicating a permanent settlement, with evidence of agricultural and livestock farming practices.

Guided Tours and Experiences

  • Guided Tours: Guided tours allow you to explore the main archaeological points of the site, offering detailed explanations of the history and culture of the ancient inhabitants.
